Mississauga Life Early Spring 2015 : Page 5

MiiaugaLife at 30! ere we are at issue #30. It seems an apt moment to reflect on all that we have learned and the host of fascinating local stories we have shared with our readers since Mike Douglas and I published the first issue of Mississauga Life in January 2011. This all began as a couple of community activists deciding to jump in to create a “voice of our Mike Douglas (L) and Don McVie (R) in 2010, back when the own” for Mississauga residents Marilyns and Mississauga Life were both early works in progress. that everyone agreed was long overdue. Little did we know how challenging or how refreshing this wild ride would be. Our little team could not have survived over the past four and half years were it not for all of the encouragement we were given by you, our wonderful readers. Thank you! It is gratifying to know that Mississauga Life is chosen, read and appreciated by more people than ever before. Today we touch more than 200,000 readers, and that number grows as we make it easier than ever for you to get your “spirit of the city.” Once available only by mail or courier, thousands of people now grab their print edition at one of our convenient racks in select locations including all City libraries and the Civic Centre. In the coming months, public access to the print edition will grow dramatically again, as Mississauga Life moves into virtually all community centres, arenas, seniors’ centres and golf courses across the city. To effectively serve this vast and growing audience, we will print even more copies. Regular readers will notice some changes right away as we streamline our design and tighten our focus to create an even more effective showcase for Mississauga and its stories. To complement this evolution, we will launch a new publication called Spirit West —a magazine that will boast engaging and thought-provoking conversations along with a whole new focus on lifestyle and tasteful opportunities we think you will enjoy! Spirit West will be distributed in Mississauga, Oakville and Burlington, and of course, you will always be able to titillate your Spirit online! We welcome you along for the ride. Good news for City Centre but sad news for us is that Mike Douglas has stepped down from his role at Mississauga Media in order to stand for election as Ward 4 Councillor in the upcoming by-election. Mike has been a friend and collaborator, and was often the public face of Mississauga Life over the years. He made a vital contribution to creating this magazine and in defining the spirit it embraces. As Editor and Co-Publisher, Mike got to know—and often craft a working relationship with—virtually every elected official in the City of Mississauga, their provincial and federal counterparts, and many senior members of staff as well. Always the engaged activist, his insights and clear-headed perspective on the human side of public process have been invaluable resources for our team. We hope that his considerable experience here combined with all those skills he joined us with serve him well in future. Good luck, Mike! Thank you to our many thousands of wonderful readers who have stuck with us, who read us and will continue to read us through the next 30 or perhaps 300 issues. Thank you to our advertisers who have trusted us to share their ideas and offerings with our readers. Thank you to Mike Douglas and to all of the amazing writers, photographers, designers and editorial and sales staff who have dedicated themselves to making Mississauga Life something very special. Mississauga Life at 30!

Don Mcvie

Here we are at issue #30. It seems an apt moment to reflect on all that we have learned and the host of fascinating local stories we have shared with our readers since Mike Douglas and I published the first issue of MississaugaLife in January 2011.

This all began as a couple of community activists deciding to jump in to create a “voice of our own” for Mississauga residents that everyone agreed was long overdue. Little did we know how challenging or how refreshing this wild ride would be. Our little team could not have survived over the past four and half years were it not for all of the encouragement we were given by you, our wonderful readers. Thank you!

It is gratifying to know that MississaugaLife is chosen, read and appreciated by more people than ever before. Today we touch more than 200,000 readers, and that number grows as we make it easier than ever for you to get your “spirit of the city.” Once available only by mail or courier, thousands of people now grab their print edition at one of our convenient racks in select locations including all City libraries and the Civic Centre.
